STATEMENT ON CLIMATE CHANGE – AZMIN ALI

95

As Australia continues to be ravaged by wildfires with unprecedented destruction of its environment, we are deeply concerned with the rising numbers of lives and homes lost.

Recognising our history of close bilateral ties, the Cabinet has approved plans for Malaysia to provide assistance to Australia in the form of funds and deployment of personnel and strategic assets in the rescue and fire extinguishing operations. The mission will be coordinated through the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).

The world is bearing witness to the devastating effects of climate change as seen in what is happening not only in Australia but other regions as well.

It is an international crisis that must serve as a wake-up call at every level – individuals, organisations and nation states.

Outbreaks of unseasonal floods and raging wildfires around the world, along with melting polar ice caps and rising sea levels are exhibiting catastrophic effects on all of humanity, regardless of national boundaries.

Therefore, a global response towards sustainable growth and development is key. We need to prove our commitment, individually and collectively, to commit to a clear implementation roadmap for sustainable policies we have painstakingly crafted through the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
