PUTRAJAYA, Sept 12 2024 (Bernama) – As Malaysians celebrated National Day on 31 August 2024, the theme Jiwa Merdeka—the Spirit of Independence—served as a profound reminder of the nation’s transformative journey and future aspirations. Marking the 67th anniversary of Malaysia’s declaration of independence from British colonial rule in 1957, Jiwa Merdeka called upon us to reflect on our collective achievements and the ongoing efforts required to advance as a unified and progressive nation.
Jiwa Merdeka captures the essence of our national identity and the rich multicultural tapestry that defines Malaysia. It symbolises not only our liberation from colonial constraints but also our enduring commitment to overcoming challenges that threaten our unity. This year’s theme emphasises the need for renewed focus on intellectual and economic progress, urging us to strengthen our dedication to these crucial areas.
The story of our independence is a testament to resilience and vision. In 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman and his pioneering leaders orchestrated a peaceful transition from British rule, ending over a century of colonial control. This landmark achievement laid the foundation for a nation where diverse cultures and ethnicities coexist harmoniously. The subsequent integration of Sabah and Sarawak into Malaysia in 1963 further exemplifies our dedication to unity and inclusivity.
Education is central to the spirit of Jiwa Merdeka. A cohesive society thrives on shared values and mutual respect—principles nurtured by education. Schools and universities play a pivotal role in bridging divides and promoting social cohesion. By embracing diversity and inclusivity, educational institutions lay the groundwork for a united nation.
Today’s education extends beyond academic excellence. It equips students with essential skills such as analytical thinking, technical expertise, and creative problem-solving—competencies crucial for navigating the global stage and shaping a promising future. At Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, our EmPOWER Programme embodies this educational evolution. We are committed not only to academic learning but also to empowering students with entrepreneurial spirit, emotional intelligence, creativity, communication skills, and critical thinking. Our aim is to prepare them for leadership and innovation in an ever-evolving world.
Jiwa Merdeka also calls for renewed attention to addressing social and economic disparities. For Malaysia to progress harmoniously, we must confront issues of inequality and injustice. This year, our students at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia have actively participated in community work and social initiatives. Notably, our EmPOWER Impact Projects 2024 raised RM120,000 through innovative crowdfunding activities from January to May 2024. This funding supported ten deserving charitable organisations in the Klang Valley, making a tangible impact on society.
The spirit of Jiwa Merdeka is exemplified by our commitment to sharing Malaysia’s rich heritage with the world. The Summer Programme 2024 at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, held from 4 to 17 August, was a vibrant celebration of Malaysia’s cultural diversity. International students from the UK, Dubai, France, and Nigeria participated in the programme, which focused on learning basic Malay, Malaysian history, and culture. They attended workshops and explored iconic tourist destinations such as the Petronas Twin Towers, Batu Caves, Putrajaya, and Melaka.
Moreover, the immersive homestay experience in Kampung Lonek, Negeri Sembilan, provided a deep dive into Malaysia’s history and traditions, fostering a global appreciation for our unique cultural tapestry. This programme not only broadened participants’ cultural understanding but also strengthened international connections, truly embodying the spirit of Jiwa Merdeka.
Let us continue to fully embrace the true essence of Jiwa Merdeka. This celebration is not only about honouring our freedom from colonial rule but also about committing to a future that is united, progressive, and inclusive. By investing in education and addressing the needs of all communities, we ensure that the spirit of independence continues to guide us towards a brighter future.
In honouring our past and actively shaping our future, we pave the way for continued national success.
