Bersih Congress to Set Direction Leading Up to the 16th General Election

By : The Steering Committee of BERSIH

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (BERSIH) takes seriously the issue of the slow implementation of the reform agenda by the current government. BERSIH stresses that the reform agenda must be taken seriously by all parties, especially the Federal Government.

We must recognize that Malaysia is currently navigating a crucial phase of democratic transition that will determine whether we are on the right path toward building an inclusive, democratic, and just society, or regressing by maintaining regressive policies.

The failure to implement the reform agenda will result in prolonged political fatigue among the public due to the erosion of their trust in the hope for change. Worse still, it will lead to a loss of public trust in good governance, clean and fair elections, and the firm enforcement of laws, particularly in protecting the parliamentary democracy system and combating corruption and abuse of power.

Therefore, with this awareness, BERSIH will organize the Bersih Congress as a platform to bring together civil society organizations, students, and the public to formulate plans and resolutions ahead of the upcoming general election.

The Bersih Congress will also feature leading intellectuals and community activists who will share insights and collaborate on joint planning.

Invited speakers include former Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat Tan Sri Ariff Md Yusof, former Bersih Chairperson Dato’ Ambiga Sreenevasan, Managing Editor of Sinar Harian Dato’ Hussamuddin Yaacob, President of ABIM Ahmad Fahmi Samsudin, COO of IDEAS Sri Murniati Yusuf, and others (speakers TBC).

The Bersih Congress will take place on May 25, 2024, at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH). Registration and detailed information can be found at the link https://bit.ly/kongres2024.

Bersih invites the participation of all parties, especially civil society organizations, students, and young people, to make this Congress a success.
