“Life is like a box of chocolates; you’ll never know what you’re gonna get.”
This endearing quote from the “Forrest Gump” movie serves as a poignant reminder that life’s journey is a blend of both sweetness and bitterness. Much like unwrapping a box of chocolates, life’s moments can evoke a myriad of emotions, yet we cherish each piece with anticipation and delight, nonetheless.
Similarly, the blue door depicted in the Netflix series “Gadis Kretek” symbolises the enigmatic pathways of life. Through trials and triumphs, we are shaped into the individuals we are meant to be. The blue door serves as a beacon, urging us to venture into the unknown and uncover new dimensions of our existence. It embodies personal evolution and the courage to overcome obstacles, emphasising that our true essence is defined not by challenges, but by our resilience in overcoming them.
Moreover, the significance of the blue door extends beyond its physical presence; it acts as a poignant link to familial customs and heritage. Within the narrative of “Gadis Kretek,” the blue door is not merely a threshold but a tangible symbol of Jeng Yah’s father’s enduring legacy in the clove cigarette industry. It stands as a silent witness to generations of craftsmanship and dedication, underscoring the profound importance of honouring our familial roots and traditions. As Jeng Yah navigates her own journey, the blue door serves as a reminder of the rich tapestry of her family’s history, instilling in her a deep sense of pride and responsibility to carry forward their legacy with reverence and respect.
The symbolism of the blue door also transcends its physical dimensions to challenge deeply ingrained societal norms and gender expectations. Throughout the series, Jeng Yah emerges as a very powerful protagonist, defying conventional roles and expectations imposed upon her by the Indonesian society at that time. Her unwavering resolve and unyielding spirit mirror the resilience of women everywhere who strive to break free from the shackles of patriarchal constraints. It signals a new era of empowerment and inclusivity, where individuals are valued not for their conformity to societal standards but for their courage to chart their own path, regardless of gender or background.
And above all, the teachings of Prophet Muhammad also offer profound guidance in navigating life’s unexpected twists and turns. His response to the first divine revelation serves as a timeless lesson in confronting life’s surprises with wisdom and composure. When the Angel Gabriel conveyed the command “Iqra” (read) to him, Prophet Muhammad was initially startled, but he responded with a spirit of attentiveness and reflection. His measured reaction underscores the importance of seeking counsel and engaging in introspection during times of uncertainty. Instead of succumbing to fear or doubt, the Prophet embraced the revelation with humility and sincerity, setting a precedent for believers to approach life’s challenges with courage and faith. By embodying these teachings, individuals can draw strength from the Prophet’s example, learning to navigate life’s uncertainties with resilience, and finding solace in the guidance of divine wisdom contained within the Quran and hadiths.
In summary, as we navigate the ups and downs of life, let us heed the lessons imparted by the ‘box of chocolates’ quote, the blue door, and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, embracing every moment of our life with an open heart and a spirit of curiosity. Through this journey, we not only become more adaptable and receptive to life’s unlimited offerings but also create deeper connections with ourselves and those around us, enriching everyone’s life experiences along the way. Pablo Picasso once said, “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”
Let us all embrace life’s surprises and gifts with open arms, preferably with a box of chocolates in hand!
