Touch ‘n Go eWallet plants first batch of trees under Mission GreenPossible campaign

Achieves target of planting 2,000 trees within 3 months from the launch of the campaign

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 JANUARY 2023 – Touch ‘n Go Group, through Touch ‘n Go eWallet, planted its first batch of actual trees today after achieving a 100% virtual tree on the campaign’s microsite as a result of collections from the public through in-app and QR donations, Touch ‘n Go Group’s corporate donation as well as from a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the specially designed Mission GreenPossible Touch ‘n Go cards.

The tree-planting ceremony, which was hosted by the Kajang Municipal Council, was held in collaboration with Yayasan Hijau Malaysia. The first batch comprise an estimated total of 2,000 trees, of which 1,000 rare fruit trees were planted across a 1.4-acre site in Taman Tasik Cempaka, Bangi. The remaining number of trees will be planted at a later date and venue within the first quarter of the year.

Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, was on hand to grace the occasion. He was accompanied by Alan Ni, Chief Executive Officer of TNG Digital Sdn Bhd, Lum Joy Deng, Chief Corporate Development Officer of Touch ‘n Go Sdn Bhd, Amin Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Hijau Malaysia, Tuan Haji Najmuddin Bin Jemain, President of the Kajang Municipal Council and Dato’ Indera Mohd Ridza bin Awang, Director General of the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia.

Representatives and participants from Touch ‘n Go Group, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Yayasan Hijau Malaysia and the Kajang Municipal Council also participated in the tree-planting.

Launched on 26 October 2022, the Mission GreenPossible: 100 Million Trees by 2025 campaign aims to contribute towards environmental conservation through efforts made by the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia and Yayasan Hijau Malaysia to plant more trees across Malaysia.  Touch ‘n Go eWallet users are able to contribute towards the cause by making donations through the eWallet app. The campaign pledges that for every 100% grown virtual tree, a batch of actual trees will be planted.

Alan Ni, Chief Executive Officer of TNG Digital said, “We are pleased that the campaign managed to grow our virtual tree so quickly. We reached 100% contribution, amounting to RM600,000 through three contribution channels within just 3 months, aligned with our initial target. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our eWallet users who have come forward to donate and contribute towards making Malaysia a more sustainable place for our future generations. We hope to continue having the same support as we start to grow our second virtual tree.”

Categorised under the sustainability and responsibility pillar of Living Sustainably with Touch ‘n Go eWallet, the Mission GreenPossible: 100 Million Trees by 2025 campaign supports Touch ‘n Go Group’s sustainability framework, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) centred around 4 pillars – Tech 4 Good, Treating People Fairly, Digital Inclusion, and Our Planet. Specifically, under the Our Planet pillar, the Group strives to achieve corporate carbon neutrality, whilst supporting the preservation and capture of carbon in established carbon sinks through efforts such as tree-planting, mangrove restoration, and preservation of ecosystems.

Launched on 5 January 2021, the Greening Malaysia Programme: National 100 Million Trees by 2025 Campaign serves as a national action plan which aims to plant 100 million trees by the year 2025. It is a 5-year initiative under the purview of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change along with lead agencies under the Ministry such as the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah Forestry Department, Forest Department Sarawak, Forest Research Institute Malaysia, and Yayasan Hijau Malaysia.

Championing the theme “Our Trees, Our Life”, this campaign aims to raise awareness on the significance of forests and foster appreciation among the public. It also aims to ensure 54% of land area in Malaysia would be covered with forest. To date, a total of over 51 million trees, comprising over 1,300 species have been planted nationwide under this campaign. There is a remainder of over 48 million trees to be planted in order to achieve the target of 100 million trees by 2025.
