PUTRAJAYA 24 September 2019 – YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia, who will be accompanied by his spouse YABhg Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Hj Mohd Ali; Minister of Foreign Affairs YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah; Minister of Economic Affairs YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and senior government officials, will lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (74th UNGA) in New York, United States of America, from 24 to 28 September 2019 and this will be his second appearance as the 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
According to the media statement issued by Ministry Of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia today, Tun Dr Mahathir is scheduled to deliver Malaysia’s national statement at the General Debate on 27 September 2019. The theme for this year’s General Debate, “Galvanizing Multilateral Efforts for Poverty Eradication, Quality Education, Climate Action and Inclusion” focuses on the continuing relevance of the United Nations system.
” YAB Prime Minister’s address at the 74th UNGA is expected to highlight current developments in the world and stress on the importance of multilateralism as well as the need for countries to work together in addressing common challenges. YAB Prime Minister is also expected to outline Malaysia’s commitment in working with other UN Member States in achieving objectives under the theme of the 74th General Debate and beyond. He may also underscore Malaysia’s expectations of the United Nations as the principal international organisation mandated to maintain international peace and security.
YAB Prime Minister will deliver Malaysia’s statement at Leaders Dialogue 6: The 2020-2030 Vision during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (SDG Summit) on 25 September 2019. He is also scheduled to speak at the “Environmental Stewardship in Addressing Poverty to Achieve Sustainable Development for All” event at the UN on 26 September 2019, jointly organised by Malaysia as the main organiser, together with Turkey, Pakistan and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). In addition, YAB Prime Minister would also be speaking at a High Level Side Event entitled “Rohingya Crisis – A Way Forward”, which Malaysia would co-host together with Bangladesh, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Canada. ” said the Ministry.
In New York, Tun Dr Mahathir is scheduled to meet with members of the Council on Foreign Relations and participate in the World Leaders Forum at Columbia University. He is also slated to be interviewed by several international media organisations such as the Wall Street Journal and Oxford Business Group, and meet with renowned entrepreneurs and potential investors from the United States. Meanwhile YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is scheduled to participate in meetings and events such as the High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage; High-Level Plenary Meeting to Commemorate and Promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons; 10th Ministerial Meeting of the UN Group of Friends of Mediation; and Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Ministerial Meeting, among others. He is also expected to participate as a panellist at the Ministerial side event “United Nations General Assembly Special Session 2021 (UNGASS 2021) on Corruption: A Path Forward to Enhance and Strengthen the International Anti-Corruption Legal Framework”.
Saifuddin is also expected to attend several ministerial-level meetings related to ASEAN; the Commonwealth; the Non-Aligned Movement; the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC); and, the Group of 77 (G77); as well as other events held on the side-lines of the 74th UNGA.
Meanwhile YB Mohamed Azmin Ali, Minister of Economic Affairs is scheduled to attend the SDG Summit; High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development (FfD) as well as other side-events on the margins of the 74th UNGA.
