The Department of Quantity Surveying, Universiti Malaya (UM) has accomplished another feat by becoming the Champion and the Runner-up in the prestigious CIOB Malaysia Inter-University Student Challenge 2023 competition with the theme, ‘Challenges of Construction Waste in Malaysia through Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Construction Industry 4.0 (IR4.0)’. The competition was organised by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Malaysia and supported by INTI International University. Ten teams representing various public and private universities throughout Malaysia took part in the competition.
The Bachelor of Quantity Surveying students have demonstrated exceptional skills and innovation throughout the course of this competition, which began on 1 June 2023 and concluded on 3 November 2023.
Every participating team were presented with a series of demanding challenges before earning the right to compete in the final round. The theme of the competition which addressed the critical issue of construction waste, prompted the students to identify and propose possible areas of improvement in construction waste management as the way forward.
The first place went to the ‘Mind Vision Positive’ (MVP) team, under the expert guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhanim Zakaria. The MVP team members, Kong Hui Li, Goo Wern Shian, Wong Sin Yee, Ho Wei An, and Puvanasiri Kumarevelan showcased their skills by excelling in all aspects of the competition. Their exemplary work has not only earned them recognition but their innovative approach to addressing construction waste challenges set a new standard for the construction industry.
To boot, the runner-up in the CIOB Malaysia Inter-University Student Challenge 2023 competition went to the ‘X-Waste’ team, led by Dr. Nur Mardhiyah Aziz, who played the crucial role in mentoring the team throughout the competition. The X-Waste team is composed of five students, namely Kwang Yi Hin, Chai Wei Chien, Chong Shi Xin, Cheah Chen Yee and Lee Ting Ni, showcased their expertise in addressing construction waste challenges.
The accomplishments of the Quantity Surveying students from UM in the competition have not only enhanced the university reputation, but also have also made significant contributions in addressing the critical issue of construction waste management in Malaysia. Their exceptional performance demonstrates the importance of nurturing young talents as they work towards building a sustainable future in the construction industry.
