PUTRAJAYA 20 Jan 2025 – The establishment of an Asean cyber crime task force such as the International Police (Interpol) to curb cyber crime in regional countries, said Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said this was to facilitate the sharing of intelligence information and cooperation in dealing with digital threats more effectively.

“Over the past year, Malaysia reported financial losses of more than RM1.22 billion due to cyber crime and successfully detected millions of cyber threats.

“This reinforces the need to improve cyber resilience and cyber security measures more proactively.” he said.

He said this in a speech at the Launching and Opening Ceremony of the Asia International Security Expo and Summit 2025 (AISSE’25).

In the meantime, Zahid also urged all stakeholders including the government, law enforcement agencies, and industry leaders to take decisive action in several matters including artificial intelligence (AI)-based policing.

“We must implement AI-based policing planning and real-time city monitoring to proactively detect and prevent security threats.

“Secondly, the establishment of a blockchain-based identity verification system at the national level is important to protect online transactions and reduce identity fraud,” he said.

Zahid added that the effort should also involve public-private partnerships to strengthen cyber security, improve the sharing of intelligence information, and accelerate response to threats through collaboration between the government, corporate companies, and technology firms.
