JAKARTA, 5 September 2024 – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof delivered the Keynote Address at the 2024 Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) which was officiated by His Excellency Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia.
In the keynote address, he emphasized the need for regional cooperation in addressing climate change โ an issue that transcends borders and affects all aspects of the economy and society.
“I share Malaysiaโs commitment to the ASEAN plan of action for energy cooperation (APAEC), framework that improve security, accessibility and energy sustainability.
The initiative such as the ASEAN Power Grid and Trans-ASEAN Gas pipeline plays an important part in driving regional energy integration and resilience while boosting the use of renewable energy.
Malaysia is committed to hit the 70% mark for the renewable energy through the power generation mix by 2050, with the slight improvement from the current 27% ” said Fadillah in a post on his official X page.
He added, Malaysiaโs strategy would focus on solar energy, hydropower and biomass technology, that benefits the main initiative such as the Large Scale Solar Program (LSS), Corporate Green Power Program (CGPP) and Net Energy Metering scheme (NEM). It is in line with the global decarbonization, supporting the transition for a cleaner and greener energy systems.
“As ASEAN chairman in 2025, Malaysia will be prioritizing a more comprehensive cooperation in operating APAEC from 2026 until 2030, with the attention to increase the regional energy connectivity, sharing good practices, and making sure the transition is fairer and more inclusive. This collective effort will push more meaningful progress towards a sustainable and resilient energy for the future of the region.
Achieving Net Zero is a challenge that our country cannot tackle alone. Malaysia is committed in continuing to work closely with ASEAN partners in building a sustainable and prosperous future for future generations.” said Fadillah.
