PUTRAJAYA, July 13, 2024 – During a recent cabinet meeting, Minister of Digital, Gobind Singh Deo, along with Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, and Minister of Law and Institutional Reform, Dato’ Seri Azalina Othman, raised concerns about the increasing trend of cyberbullying. The recent case of Rajeswari Appham, who tragically passed away, is the only known case of its kind.
Gobind emphasized the need for decisive and immediate action in handling cyberbullying cases. He stated that the evolving digital world requires new approaches to business, education, and daily life. Efforts are underway to expand internet infrastructure, ensuring that all segments of society can fully benefit from technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI).
As new digital platforms continue to emerge, they will empower businesses and enhance our quality of life. However, Gobind stressed the importance of ensuring that these platforms prioritize cybersecurity, protect personal data, and prevent misuse by any party.
He called for robust legislation to prevent abuse and underscored the existing legal framework, including the Communications and Multimedia Act, Penal Code, and Computer Crimes Act. Additionally, Gobind proposed considering new laws that hold platform owners accountable and swiftly address ongoing issues.
The government aims to signal its commitment to finding solutions, with all relevant stakeholders playing crucial roles. Gobind assured that authorities would take appropriate action, ensuring justice for victims.
He concluded by expressing readiness to assist if needed in addressing this matter.
