UM Student Triumphs as Champion at JKR BIM Awards 2023

In a display of academic prowess and innovation, Ahmad Aqil Zaidi, a Bachelor of Quantity Surveying student from the Department of Quantity Surveying, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Malaya, emerged as the Champion in the ‘Best BIM Academic Research’ for undergraduate category during the JKR Building Information Modelling (BIM) Award 2023 competition that took place on 24th and 25th October 2023.

The competition, organized by the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) at Menara Kerja Raya in Kuala Lumpur, witnessed fierce rivalry among 39 participants hailing from esteemed public and private universities across Malaysia. Ahmad Aqil’s achievement was attributed to his research, entitled ‘Value Engineering (VE) & BIM Synergy at LOD300 Stage’, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Sr Dr. Saipol Bari Abd Karim, stood out for its innovation, depth, and practical application of VE in BIM. Winners of various categories received the award from the Deputy Director General (Specialist Sector) of JKR Malaysia, Datuk Sr Amran bin Haji Mohd Majid, in conjunction with the 5th JKR BIM Day 2023 themed “Transforming Digital Construction with Emerging Technologies”.

The highlight of the event came during the Gala Dinner held to appreciate the champions of the ASEAN Innovation & BIM Awards, officiated by the Honourable Minister of Works, Dato’ Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The dinner was co-hosted by Autodesk & JKR Malaysia at the Sime Darby Convention Centre, where Ahmad Aqil was presented with the prestigious award, marking his outstanding research achievement in the field.

Ahmad Aqil’s research has not only earned him the title of Champion at the JKR BIM Awards 2023 but has also secured recognition on a broader scale. With an impressive tally of seven (7) awards, both locally and internationally, his work has been published in Scopus-indexed journal and proceeding, as well as featured in a professional body’s newsletter.
