Bandar Seri Begawan’s Joint Declaration Strengthen Malaysia’s Commitment on Energy Security and Transition Initiatives Towards Low Carbon Energy.

17 September 2021 – The Minister from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the declaration is a joint commitment by ASEAN Energy Ministers in strengthening energy security and intensifying energy transition initiatives towards low carbon energy in the region.

He said the Joint Declaration welcomed the cooperation and support in the form of funding, investment and technical assistance from ASEAN Dialogue Partners, International Organisations and other parties in ensuring the successful implementation of the ASEAN Action Plan on Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II: 2021-2025.

“Malaysia reiterated its commitment to ensure the successful implementation of the work plans of these Sub-Sector Networks under the APAEC Phase II particularly in achieving ASEAN’s aspiration to increase the capacity of Renewable Energy (RE) mix in electricity supply to 35% by 2035”, said the Minister.

“Malaysia also shared its initiatives for economic recovery post COVID- 19 through the implementation of RE initiatives which created jobs opportunities and opened up green investments,” he said during the Energy Meeting (39th AMEM) and Associated Meetings from 15 to 16 September 2021 virtually.

Malaysia also presented the country’s energy transition plan that will contribute to the decarbonisation agenda of the electricity supply industry, particularly in achieving the country’s renewable capacity target of 31% by 2025 and 40% by 2035.

“Malaysia shared its efforts to transition the country’s electricity sector towards a lower carbon pathway. The Ministry stressed that the plan is inclusive, equitable and more importantly, affordable for the people,” he said.
